Changing The Sink System to Support The Employee

Design changes are very much needed for the sink systems in hospitals decontaminations departments.  Most if not all designs position the sink against a wall and do not give adequate counter space on either side of the sinks.

The ergonomics associated to this design does not necessarily attract a desire to work in the area.  Standing in front of a sink facing a wall for eight hours is just not something that everyone wants to do.

Changing this design to an island counter, shown below in the center of decontamination with triple sinks, additional spray arms, and counter space on both sides of the sinks gives staff a tool that improves their view of the department while allowing better ventilation and lighting.

Open space at either end allows for trash and small instrument tables given way to a more flexible table system

Minimize gap between sinks to allow racking of ring-handled instruments. Additionally the installation of the shower head faucet in place of the standard faucet reduces plumbing and future problems.

No gap between sinks allows for pre-racking and grouping of instruments resulting in improved manual washing and sorting.

The correct faucet and spray gun gives employees the tools they need to complete low and intermediate level washing.

The island design is actually two wall sink counters installed back-to-back in the center of the room.  The right side will accommodate the new STERIS EPS washer with the overall design to incorporate access to all plumbing to address water leaks as soon as they occur.

I would recommend that both sides include a triple sink

Below is the age old wrong way to design a decontamination sink system

Just one more design that does not support the process in decontamination

Too much gap between sinks elminates the ability to pre-rack
